FALL ENGAGEMENT SESSION INSPIRATION | OUTFIT + LOCATION GUIDE
I know, I know. It’s only August. BUT fall is right around the corner! Not only is fall the busiest season for weddings in Virginia, but it is also a busy season for engagement sessions as well. Everyone wants those changing leaves and golden evenings - and who can blame them?! Since it is our 6th fall season, we wanted to share a few tips for choosing a location and an outfit for fall engagement session photos.
1.Neutrals are always safe, but we also love jewel tones!
Picking an outfit is hard, I totally get that. One of my favorite resources for this is Pinterest - not only great for finding recipes, but also finding portrait session outfit inspiration! Some of our favorite outfits over the years incorporate navy blue, burgundy or emerald tones - which is perfect for the changing colors of fall. While you cannot go wrong with neutrals, I suggest adding in other, muted colors to compliment each other and show your personalities.
2. Two outfits are always welcome.
Not sure which outfit to pick? Bring them both! I always tell couples to start with whatever outfit they feel more comfortable in, and then we can change after a little bit. I also like to start with the dressier option out of the two, since most of the photos we take will be with the first outfit. For fall, many couples like to wear a dressier option and then a cozy, casual option - but it is totally up to you all! Here is my Pinterest board for more outfit inspiration.
Pro tip: check out this pop-up tent on Amazon for changing. I have one in my car that my couples can use, but it is SO useful that I tell everyone to make sure they have one, no matter which photographer they have!
3. Pick a location that is versatile, but is special to you two as a couple.
It is sometimes overwhelming when looking at all the great choices we have in Virginia for portrait session locations. That being said, think about what you two like to do as a couple. Is there a place or type of place that is special to you? Is there a brewery, winery or hiking trail you all frequent? Getting photos taken in a spot that is meaningful to you always makes the photos more special. Another great option is to have photos at your wedding venue. This lets us explore the property without feeling rushed for time - and find those hidden jewels!
4. Ladies - hair and makeup will make you feel like the queen you are!
I know I sound like a broken record, but your engagement session is the perfect time to have your hair and makeup trial. You will get to use that trial (which you have to do anyway!) and get some professional photos taken of you and your beau! It also gives you more confidence, which makes the session more relaxed and fun. Not into hair and makeup? No worries - I just think it is a great opportunity to use the hair and makeup trial to your advantage!
5. Have fun and relax (and bring champagne!)
One thing I have learned over the years is that everyone is more relaxed and has more fun if we start the session with some champagne. I mean, we are celebrating your engagement, after all! You bring the bottle, I bring the glasses, and we can toast to your future as a married couple! The pictures are super cute, too...
